Abstract:

Inflammation is a critical biological process that protects the body from infection and injury; however, chronic or excessive inflammation is implicated in the etiology of many illnesses, like autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and cancer. Conventional anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids, though effective, often come with significant side effects. This has led to growing interest in herbal medicines as safer alternatives. This review explores the anti-inflammatory potential of two prominent herbal agents—Curcuma longa (turmeric) and Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera). Turmeric’s active constituent, curcumin, exhibits significant immunomodulatory effects by interfering with cytokine production, IgE synthesis, and mast cell activation. Similarly, Compounds found in aloe vera include aloin, emodin, and acemannan, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and antioxidant qualities. While both botanicals offer therapeutic promise, they also present potential adverse effects and contraindications, underscoring the importance of cautious use, particularly among individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
