Colocasia esculenta is usually known as “Cocoyam”, ”Dasheen”, ”Elephant ear”, “Taro” and other different names. It is the herbaceous perennial plant of Araceae family, with a height of approximately 1.5 m and heart to arrow shaped large and smooth leaves, that can reproduce through the rhizomes such as corm and tubers. The plant is also been referred as a root vegetable is native to south-eastern Asia and Indian subcontinent. The diverse parts such as leaves, corm, stem, roots etc. have been used to serve versatile from nutrients to health care since ancient times across the domain in precise regions. Several studies have suggested that the taro possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anticancer and immunomodulatory properties. The plant has been used as customary medicine in curing some of the health disorders of digestive, neurological, nephrological, respiratory system etc. The current review studies have been carried out to provide an outline of surfeit of research on the pharmacognosy and benefits of Colocasia esculenta and its outcome suggests that there is broader space in the future for the therapeutics through the research on taro.
